‘SUPER APE’ to upset Black Friday

So I was in my local record store the other day looking to grab a copy of Lee “Scratch” Perry’s seminal SUPER APE, which I currently own on CD. My man Danny, who works the record shop, was quick to let me know that I should wait until the day after Thanksgiving  – November 29, 2013 or Black Friday here in the states – because a SUPER APE 2LP ETCHED EDITION (with poster) will be dropping!  The deluxe edition vinyl set will be released by Get On Down Records, who also released the BLACKBOARD JUNGLE and SCRATCH & COMPANY CHAPTER 1 deluxe editions.

SUPER APE is the King Kong of dub albums, and a must-own for any respectable reggae fan.  SUPER APE is a dub album produced and engineered by Lee “Scratch” Perry, credited to his studio band The Upsetters.  In Jamaica, the album was released under the name Scratch the Super Ape in July 1976 on Perry’s own Upsetter label. The Jamaican version had a different track order than the international version that was released in August the same year on Island Records.

With 10 essential tracks from the original release: “Zion’s Blood”, “Croaking Lizard”, “Dread Lion”, “Patience”, “Dub Along”, “Black Vest”, “Underground”, “Curly Dub” “Three In One” and “Super Ape.”

The album features only the best players of instruments from the Black Ark era, including:

Lee Perry – producer
Michael “Mikey Boo” Richards – drums
Anthony “Benbow” Creary – drums
Noel “Skully” Simms – percussion
Boris Gardiner – bass
Earl “Chinna” Smith – guitar
Keith Sterling – piano
Bobby Ellis – horns
“Dirty” Harry Hall – horns
Herman Marquis – horns
Vin Gordon – trombone
Egbert Evans – flute
Prince Jazzbo – toasting on “Croaking Lizard”
Barry Llewellyn – backing vocals
Earl Morgan – backing vocals
