MEDITATIONS SERIES w/ Addis Pablo & Suns of Dub

Words by Tony Lowe, Video by Tony Lowe and Taliesin Gilkes-Bower

Meditations is a largeup.com documentary series revolving around the everyday spiritual life of the Suns of Dub crew and other conscious artists. Chapter 1 features singer Jesse Royal and Ras Jammy (of the Suns of Dub) harvesting ackee and preparing an ital feast at Gabre Selassie’s home overlooking Kingston. The vast hillside gardens of Gabre’s “Shaolin Temple” are a place of respite for Kingston’s young musicians during the day, and home to his famed Rockers Sound System sessions by night.

The second installment in the Meditations documentary series features some peaceful vibes with Suns of Dub’s Addis Pablo. Addis, son of dub legend Augustus Pablo and heir to his father’s status as reggae’s foremost exponent of the melodica, sat with us in Earl “Chinna” Smith’s yard to share some insight about growing up surrounded with music, and how he carries on his father’s mystic tradition today.

Inspired by film footage of Augustus with Hugh Mundell, Addis, singer Jesse Royal and drummer Tesfa Zion on Jack’s Hill for an acoustic session overlooking Kingston.

The third and final video in the Meditations depicts moments over the course of a day at the Kingston home of the Hendrix of roots reggae, guitarist Earl ‘Chinna’ Smith. His home, better known locally as Inna Di Yard, is a studio, rehearsal space, meeting ground and all-around musical oasis, world renowned for the relaxed jam sessions.

On this particular evening Addis Pablo and Ras Jammy of Suns of Dub find Ras Michael, luminary prophet of psychedelic Nyabinghi group the Sons of Negus, leading an extended acoustic session with elders such as Kiddus I, Addis, the reggae revival’s leading female voice Jah-9, and many more.
